Fatima is a city in the center of Portugal, the location of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima, a place of Catholic pilgrimage.
The chapel of the apparitions marks the place where the Virgin Mary appeared to the three little shepherds Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta who witnessed the apparition of Our Lady in 1917.
The first apparitions occurred on May 13, 1917, repeating itself in the following six months, always on the 13th (with the exception of August, which was on the 19th). The main message that Our Lady brought to the children was a request for prayer, especially, the prayer of the Rosary. Because of this Our Lady of Fatima also be known as Our Lady of the Rosary.
The last apparition took place in October and was attended by about 70,000 pilgrims who witnessed the Miracle of the Sun. Every year, more than 6 million pilgrims come to Fátima with petitions and through devotion to Our Lady.
